Friends, Audre Lorde famously wrote "poetry is not a luxury. It's a vital necessity of our existence." It is the poet's heart, after all, that can reach beyond language and into the ineffable truth which holds us. In times of grief, I turn to poetry. I tune my listening to those who speak from the depth of their yearning as a beckoning call to remember our place "in the family of things". Poetry is not just abstract and broken lines on a blank page. It is a way of being, a way of seeing. It is how we carry ourselves. Calling out to each other as beloved - habibi - is poetry. Standing stunned by each other's existence is poetry. At the heart of this being human is our poetic expression. We are each being written daily, and when aware, we can write ourselves towards justice - towards liberation. All it takes is a determination to see through the heart's eye, to let ourselves be graced by everyone and everything as worthy of being loved.May our words irrigate a possible world fit for all.
