River Writing™ Collective - River Writing
Amy May
Through this practice, I've learned to lovingly set aside my inner critic in order to stretch into my own narrative. Finding my voice in this way has been nothing short of magical. I’m forever grateful to this community, and for the ability to share this practice with others. ~ Amy May

About Moudi

Moudi Sbeity (he/they) is a Lebanese-American author, poet, and transpersonal psychotherapist. Born in Texas and raised in Lebanon, he moved to the United States at the age of eighteen as an evacuee following the 2006 July war.

In Utah, Moudi founded and operated Laziz Kitchen, a Lebanese restaurant celebrated by the New York Times as “the future of queer dining.” Moudi was also a named plaintiff in Kitchen v. Herbert, the landmark case that brought marriage equality to Utah and the 10th circuit states in 2014.

A lifelong stutterer, Moudi is passionate about writing and poetry as practices in fluency and self-expression. Their debut poetry collection and their memoir, Habibi Means Beloved, are set to be published in 2026. They now call the Rocky Mountains in Boulder, Colorado home.

About River Writing
We create a friendly place to practice by making community agreements. We read poetry aloud to find prompts and then write with pen and paper to say the truest things we can say. Before beginning, we agree to be kind, to keep each other’s confidence, and to listen to each other with undivided attention. We agree to take care of ourselves and to share responsibility for creating a welcoming space. Everyone is invited. We practice non-judgement by forgoing apology, critique, and praise. It can be challenging not to praise each other, but we choose to opt out temporarily in order to take respite from the culture of comparison. Sharing your writing is optional. Whether or not you choose to read, we respond simply by saying thank you.

About Karen

Message from Karen
We are living through quite a time! So much is on the line. While we are being pulled in many directions, one that can't be ignored, for the sake of vibrant survival... is our peace of mind. There's much to do and together, I believe, we will prevail. Along the way, however long it takes, may we make time for music, nature, food that fuels us, cuddles, poetry...anything and everything that reminds us exactly what is worth living for! As someone who lives with PTSD, it is imperative that I find ways to be "in the fight" WITHOUT fighting. If something in you felt relieved reading that last sentence and/or is curious about how that's possible, please join me for a River Writing series focused on dreaming/preserving/creating the world in which we want to live.
